More than 80,000 green-lidded recycling bins in West Suffolk will be given to residents along with two food waste caddies as part of West Suffolk Council’s Better Recycling service.

The new service, supported by the government’s Simpler Recycling legislation, aims to improve recycling rates and standardise kerbside collections.

Residents will be able to recycle glass, cartons, and plastic film and bags from the kerbside for the first time, with food waste collected separately every week.

The council agreed to introduce weekly food waste collections in October 2024, while maintaining fortnightly household waste pick-ups.

More than 80,000 recycling bins will begin arriving from today, in a three-phase delivery schedule managed by contractor Kee.

Food waste caddies, totalling 160,000 units, will be distributed by West Suffolk Council’s waste teams from Monday, March 9.

Households have been asked not to use any of the new bins until the service officially launches in June 2026.

Residents are also being encouraged to clearly label the new bins or caddies with their house name or number.

The council has said it will offer support to anyone who may find the changes difficult to adapt to, including older residents and people with mobility issues.

An information pack and collection calendar have been delivered to every home ahead of the scheme’s launch.

The new recycling programme has been set up to help the county meet the latest government recycling standards.

It also aims to make it easier for residents to recycle a wider range of materials.

West Suffolk Council said the changes will contribute to higher recycling rates.

More details and estimated delivery dates are available on the council’s website.
