Hull KR star Tyrone May could have departed the club in order to return to the NRL and play alongside his brothers, but turned it down – and as a result became a treble winner and World Club Champion.
May, 29, is the eldest of three brothers, with siblings Terrell and Taylan both playing for Wests Tigers under Benji Marshall.
Terrell has been with the Tigers since the start of 2025, after signing from Penrith, whilst Taylan joined the club on a train-and-trial deal half way through last year, and end the year with seven appearances.
Hull KR’s May has revealed that an opportunity to join his family in Australia came about, but was so driven to achieve to success with the Robins, he opted against it.
“I had the opportunity to go back home and play with my brothers last year,” May said to NRL.com.
“But I’m glad I made the decision to stay here and achieve what we’ve achieved.
“That was the main reason I wanted to stay. I could see the club going in a trajectory that I wanted to be a part of.”
May last signed a contract in June 2025, penning a two-year deal until the end of 2027.
“There’s always going to be that temptation to play with my brothers,” he revealed.
“It’s something that we’ve spoken about, that we’ve dreamed of doing since we started walking, really.
“Every time contract time comes up, there’ll always be that chat. We all fall off contract at the same time but that’s not until the end of 2027 so every time that comes, we’ll cross that bridge.
“But I did have the opportunity, and I turned it down because I thought this was the right thing to do.”
His decision in the summer of last year has certainly paid off, with Hull KR winning three trophies – including the World Club Challenge – in that time.
May was announced to stay at Craven Park one week after the club’s Challenge Cup victory, one of many crucial games that the half-back has had influence in.
