Don Gilet has been the head of the Saint Marie police force on Death In Paradise since 2024. He joined the popular BBC detective drama in 2024 for the Christmas special.
Don’s character Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson replaced departing DI Neville Parker, who decided he wanted to explore the world with his love interest DS Florence Cassell.
Mervin has made no secret of the fact Saint Marie isn’t for him – but a chance discovery that he had a half brother called Solomon, the son of his late mother Donna Bray has kept him on the island.

There has been speculation about Mervin’s future on Death In Paradise(Image: BBC)
Speaking about his character’s affinity with Saint Marie, he said: “Just by his nature and the way he is when it comes to his work and the way that his mind works, there’s always going to be a bit of kickback with the people he deals with.
“Last year, there was this antagonism between Mervin and the team because they just worked in very different ways, and both had to earn the respect of each other in the way they work.”

He added: “And let’s not forget, he didn’t want to be on the island, so he was going to be particularly reluctant to work with these people because of the personal issues he was dealing with. But as time has moved on, he’s realised that he needs these people.
“They are now gelling, they’re working as a team – now it’s cracking the cases that frustrate him, and they become frustrated as a group. You’ll still see him sometimes working at odds with the team, but they know each other and can allow for that a little more.”
However, when Solomon decided he wanted to cut ties with his brother over them being polar opposite and Mervin’s job not being good for Solomon’s reputation.
Fans had been speculating whether he might stay on the island now he and his brother have separated. But what happens next is yet to be seen – and will Mervin be making a departure?
