Photographers have been staking out positions in the National Elk Refuge in Wyoming’s Teton County, hoping for a rare opportunity to glimpse a mountain lion that has been spotted sporadically in recent weeks.

It’s not a difficult quiz. But the imagery captured by Fabian reveals how well mountain lions, or cougars, blend into their surroundings, and how cautious the cats are in their movements.
Mountain lions are solitary hunters that prey largely on mule deer and elk within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, although smaller mammals are included in their diets.

They prefer rocky terrain and forested areas that provide cover from competing predators such as wolves and bears. (Mountain lions cache their kills, which attract other predators.)
Sightings are rare in the Greater Yellowstone region, which includes the National Elk Refuge and Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks to the north.
