Bryan Robson is backing Coventry City to win the Championship title and believes Middlesbrough can pip Ipswich Town to automatic promotion.

The England legend and former Middlesbrough manager, who guided Boro to Premier League promotion in 1995 and 1998, is desperate to see his former club back in the top flight.

He was back at the Riverside earlier in the season, as a guest of Steve Gibson’s and he’s been keeping a close eye on Boro since. Although currently on a three-match winless run ahead of tonight’s match at Birmingham, Robson is convinced Boro can finish second behind Frank Lampard’s Sky Blues.

“I’m not quite sure whether Middlesbrough can win the league this year,” he told Boylesports. “They should get automatic promotion behind Coventry City.

“I watched Middlesbrough against Sheffield United and they were outstanding once they got past the first 15 minutes. The result that disappointed me was not beating Coventry.

“You’re hoping that they can keep playing to the standard of their match against Sheffield United, and I see no reason why they can’t. Their confidence should be high. They’re second in the league. They’re got the Premier League in their sights.”

He added: “Hopefully they can keep the form that they’re in at the moment and go forward to join Coventry in the Premier League because, from what I’ve seen, Coventry will win the title.”
