Hull FC have been dealt a major injury blow with Jed Cartwright facing four to five months out on the side-lines with a significant hamstring tear. The back rower limped off the field in the second half of last week’s defeat to York Knights, with scans this week now confirming the club’s worst fears.

As first reported by Love Rugby League, Cartwright is thought to be out for around 16-20 weeks with the player, who is out of contract at the end of the season, now set to miss a large chunk of the year.

Restricted to 19 first-team appearances since his arrival in June 2024, Cartwright has been dealt a tough hand as a Hull player, with hamstring and chest injuries limiting him to just 11 games last season. He also had foot problems in his first year at the club and made significant diet and lifestyle changes this off-season in a bid to be fit and firing this year.

Another gutting blow, the setback is the latest major injury concern to Hull, who also lost Will Pryce to a season ending ACL rupture at Wigan two weeks ago. They are also without Harvey Barron mid-term to an ankle injury, with full confirmation still to come on the severity.

Herman Ese’ese is also side-lined for another month but is running again following an Achilles rupture. Joe Batchelor is out with a calf tear. Young backs Ryan Westerman (foot), Joe Ward (ACL), and Roman Dawson (ACL) are also out, while Liam Knight was mutually released on compassionate grounds last weekend.

Active in the recruitment market, Hull are expected to get salary cap dispensation after Pryce’s injury, with Knight’s departure opening up a quota spot. But the extent of Cartwright’s injury may sway their decision making when it comes to positional focus, although head coach John Cartwright has already confirmed they won’t be rushing into any calls regarding new signings.
