Former Super League forward Matty Nicholson will be out of action once again after suffering a shoulder injury in the NRL reserve grade competition.

Nicholson, who featured for both Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves in the UK top flight, joined Canberra Raiders ahead of the 2025 season, and made a sublime start to life in his new colours.

Performing as one of the best back rowers in the competition, Nicholson would be dealt a long-term blow, and after five tries in his opening nine matches, he suffered a fractured fibula which required surgery, ruling him out from May to September.

Due to a lack of match fitness, the 22-year-old missed out on Ashes selection, but did manage to return for Canberra before the season’s end.

Nicholson was hoping for an injury-free 2026 season, particularly with the World Cup on the horizon, but a shoulder injury in pre-season halted his progress, and he has had to work his way back to full fitness.

Featuring in the club’s NSW Cup match this weekend, it has been reported that the back rower has suffered a reoccurrence of that shoulder injury, and he could now miss anything from weeks to months depending on if the issue requires surgery.

Ex-Catalans Dragons man picks up calf injury in NRL round one

Another man who will be known by fans of Super League is former Catalans forward Siosiua Taukieaho, who played for the French side in 2023.

The ex-Tongan international was also due to play for the club in 2024, but he was released from his contract and eventually took up a contract with Manly Sea Eagles for the following year.

The 2023 Super League Grand Finalist has reportedly torn his calf, and is set to miss the next three-six weeks, again depending on what the scan results show.
