Radio One DJ Greg James has shared an emotional update about his dad just days before he is due to set off on a fundraising challenge for Comic Relief, which will see him bike through County Durham.

The broadcaster revealed on TikTok that he has had a “terrible” few days after his dad became seriously unwell in hospital.

“Here’s a video which is more serious than I like to be on here,” he said.

“But I just wanted to update you with what’s going on in the last few days of my life.

“I’ve had a terrible time. My dad’s not very well. Not very well at all and it’s horrible.”

He explained that his father suffered a stroke during a heart operation and remains in intensive care.

Despite the family emergency, Mr James said he intends to go ahead with Comic Relief’s 1,000-kilometre tandem cycling challenge from Weymouth to Edinburgh, which begins on Friday.

He said: “He really wanted me to do this challenge, which is coming on Friday.

“So I’ve been training my t*** off for it and he knows that and he knows how much it means to me.

“So this Comic Relief challenge, 1,000 kilometres on a tandem from Weymouth to Edinburgh.

“I’m up for it, pending something horrible that happens this week, but he’s steady at the minute and I guess slowly but surely improving a bit, but it’s pretty f*****g bleak.”

Greg missed his Radio 1 Breakfast Show on Friday but said he would be back in the saddle from Monday.

The Comic Relief ride will see the DJ cycle through County Durham and other parts of the North East.

On March 18, he will travel from York to Sunderland, passing through Hartlepool, Peterlee, Seaham, and Ryhope.

The route, more than 600 miles long, requires Mr James to spend at least eight hours cycling each day.

Fans and celebrities have shared messages of support for Mr James and his family.
