Gareth Brown’s new publication, The Society of Unknowable Objects, comes out on Thursday.
It arrives a year and a half after his debut book, The Book of Doors, hit the shelves and picked up a string of top reviews including one from best-selling author Lee Child.

“It is sold in 25 territories so has been translated into lots of different languages. It is a bit surreal.
“It all happens out there and you get the odd email which says we are going to translate it into this language or that language.

“I get messages on Instagram asking for a sequel. People telling me I have read your book, it is very surreal.
“I am published by Penguin and they have just had their 90th birthday. I got invited to their celebration event last month.
“Being in a room with Stephen Fry, Rick Stein, I even had to buy a suit for it!”
The Society of Unknowable Objects is about magic in the real world. It follows a group of people in London who are aware that there are everyday, ordinary objects that can do amazing things.

Within hours of arriving, she is facing death and danger, confronted by a professional killer who seems to know all about unknowable objects, specifically one that was stolen from him a decade before.
Gareth wrote the book while still working in his role as director of screening for NHS National Services Scotland.
“This was mostly written before the Book of Doors was published. It would have been published in the February but was held back as the Book of Doors was doing so well it pushed this back,” he added.
“This was the second book of the original two book deal and I now have another two book deal in the works.
“I have compressed my work hours so I don’t work a Monday anymore so I have that free to dedicate to writing. I manage to squeeze it in!”
