Barry Keoghan issued an emotional update as he opened up about filming in Liverpool. The 33-year-old has been cast as Ringo Starr in the eagerly anticipated Beatles cinematic event series.

Sir Sam Mendes is adapting the Fab Four’s story in what promises to be the definitive account of how the lads from Liverpool conquered the world. The upcoming films are particularly exciting as it is the first time The Beatles and Apple Corps Ltd. have authorised the use of the band members’ life stories and music to be used in a scripted movie.

In addition to Barry, Paul Mescal has been cast as Sir Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison. Barry has been pictured in character as the legendary drummer as filming for the upcoming movies has taken over the city over recent weeks.

The actor said it has been special to be on location in the city where it all started for The Beatles. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, he said: “It’s an absolute joy. We’re up in Liverpool filming now so that’s sort of a thing in itself.

“The feeling up there and the response up there is beautiful. It hits you every time.” Barry has been trying to explore the city away from filming as he has spotted numerous times on Lark Lane.

He also revealed he has been out a run around the city and was emotional when he stumbled upon the famous statue of The Beatles on the waterfront. He added: “I was going on a jog in Liverpool the other day and I came across the statue of the four lads along the docks.

“So I’m very emotional about it and wanting to do them well and justice.” Barry was speaking to Entertainment Tonight ahead of the release of his new film, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, which is released on Netflix next Friday (March 20).

Barry has grown his hair out for his role as Ringo, which is a totally different look from his one as Duke Shelby in the big screen adaption of the BBC show. Speaking about the longer hair, he laughed: “It’s an effort every day.”

Although Peaky Blinders is set in Birmingham, the hit show found a second home in Liverpool as many of the scenes were shot on location here.

Cillian Murphy has reprised his famous role as the character returns from a self imposed exile following World War II to face his most destructive reckoning yet.

Barry stars opposite Cillian as Tommy’s son, Duke for the new film, which also sees Stephen Graham reprise his role as Hayden Stagg. The big budget production was kept heavily under wraps during its time in the city, but the ECHO captured images of filming crews during their time in the city.

Liverpool has become a filming hub and we are well used to the site of production crews in the region. However, filming took place in a non-traditional location during its time here as crews were spotted at the Jam Factory building in Hartley’s village.

The ECHO captured images of the crews outside the location in L9 in October 2024. The unassuming set was in a closed off location but vans and security staff were positioned outside when the ECHO visited in the autumn two years ago.

A much more dramatic scene was also spotted filming outside St George’s Hall that same week. Scenes in the trailer show things will come to a head with a dramatic explosion. ECHO photographers captured footage of what is likely this scene as people in period costume gathered for an elaborate production.
