The Walnut Tree in Heworth, received the rating, meaning major improvement necessary, following an inspection on January 29.

The Food Standards Agency website says for hygienic food handling, the standard found was improvement necessary.

The cleanliness and condition of the facilities and the building was generally satisfactory.

The Walnut Tree is a traditional dog-friendly pub noted for pub classic meals and a large beer garden. It also offers live entertainment and sport and is open daily from noon to 11pm.

It receives good reviews, with Google awarding it 4.2 stars out of five based on 754 reviews.

The most recent review gave five stars and said: “Had a brilliant visit to The Walnut Tree. The manager Scott was great to speak to and made us feel really welcome, and the girl behind the bar gave equally excellent service. I had the sausage and mash and it was absolutely delicious — proper thick gravy and really creamy mash, just perfect comfort food.

“I also noticed they run a quiz night and a darts competition, which gives the place a great community vibe. Lovely atmosphere, great staff, and amazing food. Would definitely come again!”

Tripadvisor gives The Walnut Tree 4.1 stars out of five, ranking it 243rd out of 777 York restaurants.

Whilst the most recent comment posted in January complained of ‘poor food,’ the one underneath gave five stars.

It said: “Just come back from the Walnut Tree after an excellent and faultless Christmas Dinner. It was very busy but the owners and staff made sure that everything ran smoothly with just the right amount of time between courses.

“They were very accommodating to requests.- definitely a repeater. Thank you Walnut Tree for producing such a great meal in a great atmosphere.”

In 2022, the Walnut Tree, which is part of the Stonegate Group, received a £355,000 makeover.

The Stonegate Group declined to comment on the inspection saying this was a matter for the tenant.

The pub did not respond to our requests for comment.
