Coronation Street has seemingly let slip who the murder victim will be after the flashforward. In recent times, the world’s longest-running TV soap has controversially taken a radical approach to its storytelling methods, and last month jumped forward in time to tease that a murder was on the cards in scenes set to air canonically in April.

Maggie Driscoll, Megan Walsh, Theo Silverton, Jodie Ramsey and Carl Webster were lined up as five potentials, with Betsy Swain having come across a dead body. Each of them has been painted as a villain during their time in Weatherfield, and all fronted dark storylines during their short time so far on the Manchester backstreet.

But on Monday’s instalment of the programme, Christina Boyd (Amy Robbins) was speaking to Theo (James Cartwright) in the undertakers following his split from Todd Grimshaw. Viewers will know that Todd has been the victim of coercive control and physical abuse at the hands of his ex-lover.

Having called round Shuttleworth’s to arrange with Todd when he could collect his things, Christina started joking about how business was down since a local widow seemed determined to bring the place down after her mother left money to George in his will, and has since gone about defaming the businessman on social media.

Trying to make light of it all, Christina began: “Come on, come on! What about Taylor Swift, right? Now, she was completely vilified by the social media, to the extent that people thought her career was completely over. But do you know what? She rose like a phoenix from the flames, and look at her career now. Daisy was absolutely obsessed. She completely converted me. I still think that we should sue Annie for defamation!”

George shot back: “Look, unless I’m very much mistaken, Taylor Swift did not run a family undertakers which relied on word of mouth!” When Theo offered to help in any way he could, Christina joked: “Ooh, well, you could try dying! Yeah, well, you know, we need funerals to arrange and…” Theo laughed it off, but as he made his way back out of the shop, Christina said again: “Oh, if you change your mind about dying, just give us a shout, will you?”

Following the humorous moment, fans took to Reddit to react to the scene, which could serve as foreshadowing for the big reveal. One said: “Made me chuckle!

However, in all seriousness, I don’t want Theo to die because I need him to get his comeuppance for this to be satisfying. And then have some stunning green flag man join the street and show Todd how love should actually be, it’s all cute and wholesome and gives us the needed joy on the cobbles!” Another said: “I want him imprisoned and suffer, I wouldn’t complain too much if he drops dead though.”

Others remained convinced that it will be in fact Megan, who is currently embroiled in an affair with her teenage student Will Driscoll, who will be killed off. One fan said: “Tbh, if it’s Theo or Megan dying (which, let’s be honest, it probably is), I’m still hoping for Theo. There’s real world justice, and then there’s narrative justice, and focusing on the latter I don’t want to see Todd forced to relive everything through a lengthy trial, and likely have people doubting his version of events for longer.

“Theo dies through circumstances that expose him to the community, then Todd can start the journey of moving on as soon as next month.

“Megan feels like the opposite. She gets killed, and suddenly her murder steals the focus from her abuse of Will. That cheapens the story they’re telling, rather than giving it closure, and would see Will view her as a lost love rather than realising through criminal proceedings that she abused him.”

Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITV X.
