Under the new simpler recycling law, the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) has that by March 31 councils will be required to collect recycling including food waste from “all households in England”.

In January, BCP Council confirmed an additional 102,673 households in Bournemouth and Poole would be getting food waste collections every week starting from April 6, 2026.

Households in Christchurch have had food waste recycling available since 2012.

It has been reported previously that as the scheme is part of national recycling reforms it has taken longer to roll out the service across all areas of BCP.

The roll out of food waste bins to homes and flats across Bournemouth and Poole began in February 2026.

Individual households have been receiving a kitchen caddy and an external food waste bin.

Flats that have communal bins will be receiving kitchen caddies and communal external food waste bins until March 27.

One roll of liners will be provided when caddies are delivered, after that residents can purchase compostable liners can be purchased online or from most supermarkets.
