Sutton reckons Rohl’s comments on their big city rivals have had a detrimental effect at Ibrox

Danny Rohl has shot himself in the foot at Rangers and amid their Premiership title charge is now feeling the heat from supporters at Ibrox.
That’s the view of Celtic hero and Record Sport columnist Chris Sutton, who reckons the German’s comments about the manager on the opposite side of the city, Martin O’Neill, have completely backfired.
Ahead of the Old Firm showdown in the league at Ibrox at the start of the month, Rohl questioned why the Hoops did not do more to try and overturn a 4-2 deficit that saw them crash out of the Europa League to Bundesliga high-flyers Stuttgart.
O’Neill’s side were hammered 4-1 at Parkhead in the first leg but opened the scoring in Germany in the return fixture after just a minute of play, with Luke McCowan’s strike ultimately handing them a 1-0 win, prompting Rohl to note his surprise that they did not go on to try and get back into the tie.
Despite racing into a 2-0 lead at Ibrox, a below-par second half from Rangers allowed Celtic to come back into the game and claim a share of the spoils right at the death through Reo Hatate’s penalty. And the Light Blues would suffer even more heartbreak against their bitter rivals at the same venue seven days later, exiting the Scottish Cup quarter finals on penalties after failing to make their dominance across 120 minutes count.
And Sutton reckons Rohl can only have himself to blame for ‘opening his mouth’ and not focusing on his own team’s shortcomings. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live Sport, he said: “I think Danny Rohl has had too much to say for himself in recent times.
“Danny Rohl opened his mouth and was telling Celtic how they should have played in Europe.
“This came from a guy who’s record in Europe was pretty dour. I think Rangers fans have ramped up the pressure on Danny Rohl because they are thinking ‘why don’t you just keep your mouth shut Danny? Why are you getting involved in saying how Martin O’Neill should play?’

“It’s okay if you are seeing games through against Celtic at Ibrox and knocking them out the cup. But he didn’t and in many respects, people are thinking ‘well Danny Rohl’s eye has been taken off the ball’.
“The pressure is ramped up on Rangers now.
“You just have to focus on your own club. The fanbases are so big and they hang on every word that the manager says.
“It’s not me saying this, it’s what Rangers fans are saying about Danny Rohl. It’s an obvious observation.
“Results have been good since he came in and Rangers are in a title race but just when they are getting somewhere, why would you shoot yourself in the foot? I don’t understand that.”
