After months of hibernating in the dark, a couple of Polar Bear cubs finally take their first steps outside for the first time.
In a TikTok posted by BBC Earth, Sir David Attenborough narrated the rare moment the Polar Bear cubs emerge from their den in March, when “light returns to the High Arctic, sweeping away four months of darkness.”
In the video, the mother Polar Bear first steps out to mark the “beginning of spring” in the region.
“After months of confinement underground, she toboggans down the slope,” Attenborough explained as the mom began to slide down the slope. “Perhaps to clean her fur, perhaps for sheet joy.”
Not far behind, her two Polar Bear cubs climb out for the first time to “gaze out at their bright new world for the very first time.” Their mother calls after them, and the pair begin their descent down the hill, but “this steep slope is not the easiest place to take your first steps.”
The cubs cautiously and adorably take their steps down, eager to reach their mother so they can feed, since she “delayed feeding them on this special day.”
“Their mother has not eaten for five months and lost half of her body weight,” he continued. “Now she converts the last of her fat reserves into milk for her cubs.” After the cubs feed, they playful lay on top of their mother, who basks in the warm sun.
However, Attenborough notes that the warmth can pose a problem for the mother, as it melts the sea ice she needs to hunt seals for herself and the cubs, and “she must get there before the ice breaks up.”
But even with the sun out, the temperatures in the Arctic are at minus 30 degrees Celcius and “the cubs must have the shelter of the den.”
