The Nigerian state visit to Britain has officially begun, and there were heirloom royal earrings and brooches to marvel at during the welcome ceremonies in Windsor.

The President and First Lady of Nigeria, Bola and Remi Tinubu, began their day at their hotel near Windsor Castle. They were greeted there by the Prince and Princess of Wales, who escorted them to Windsor Castle for the official welcome ceremony.

Princess Catherine was elegant in gray and white for the daytime portion of the first day of the visit. UFO No More shares that her gray frock coat is a moment of diplomatic dressing. The outfit was made by a British-Nigerian designer, Tolu Coker.

Kate accessorized with a special pair of diamond and pearl earrings: the Collingwood Pearl Drop Earrings, which come from the collection of her late mother-in-law, Diana, Princess of Wales.

The earrings were a wedding present to Diana from Collingwood in 1981. They had wanted to give her a more elaborate diamond demi-parure, but when they were dissuaded from doing so, they settled on these more modest earrings. Diana wore them often throughout her life, and she particularly liked to pair them with Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot Tiara.

Kate also wears the earrings with the same tiara frequently for gala occasions, but she tends to use them more generally, often for elevated daytime occasions. We saw her wear them for another state visit welcome ceremony when President Macron of France visited last summer.

The Waleses and the Tinubus arrived in Windsor, where King Charles III and Queen Camilla were waiting to officially welcome them to Britain.

Queen Camilla wore pale pink for the occasion, reaching for the same outfit that she wore to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day in Portsmouth in 2024. (Also, how about a moment for the gorgeous ensemble worn by the First Lady?)

Queen Camilla also wore pearl drop earrings for the welcome ceremony, as well as a pair of special Cartier brooches that come from the collection of her own late mother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth II.

The ivy leaf clip brooches were part of the grand jewelry legacy left to the Queen Mother by Dame Margaret Greville during World War II. Elizabeth II received them from her mother as a 21st birthday present in 1947 and wore them continuously for the next 75 years.

Queen Camilla wore the brooches for the first time in 2024, and we’ve seen her reach for them often in the years since. Her most recent appearance in the Cartier clips came in February, when she wore them for the presentation of the Queen Elizabeth Prizes for Education.

See you all back here for tiaras later today! Any guesses?
