While working as a medical student at the St George’s Health Centre, on Rushbottom Lane in Benfleet, Dr Ameen Mardanpour sent messages to the patient, who he knew was vulnerable, from his personal phone as he tried to form a relationship.

St George’s Medical Practice is housed in the same building as the Rushbottom Lane Surgery, however the practices are separate.

Dr Mardanpour admitted his motivation was sexual and he knew the patient was vulnerable at a Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service misconduct hearing launched on Monday.

He was aware of the patient’s vulnerability as he had reviewed her medical history and records with her GP and consulted with her.

A further hearing will take place where a decision on what sanction he will face will be decided.

Andrew Sheldon, Essex County Conservative councillor for Benfleet, said: “This is a serious case and I know it will concern many people in our community.

“Patients put a huge amount of trust in medical professionals, and it’s vital that high standards are upheld at all times.

“My thoughts are with the patient involved and I want to thank them for their courage in making the complaint. I would encourage anyone with any concerns about their care to get them looked into.

“Benfleet residents deserve safe, professional healthcare they can have confidence in.”

Dr Mardanpour admitted to all of the allegations set out before the medical tribunal, which will now progress to deliberations on if this means his practice was impaired, before a sanction is issued if impairment is found.

The allegations as set out state: “As a medical student at St Georges Medical Practice on May 23 2023, you undertook a consultation with Patient A and you used your professional position to attempt to establish an improper emotional relationship with Patient A, in that between May 23 and 26 2023 you sent the messages as set out in the schedule from your personal mobile phone.

“You knew Patient A was vulnerable as on May 23 2023 you reviewed her medical records and history as set out Schedule 2, with her GP; consulted with her and discussed the matters set out in Schedule 3. Admitted and found proved.

“Your actions as set out were sexually motivated.

“By reason of the matters set out above your fitness to practise is impaired because of your misconduct.”
