Chelsea are expected to be in the market for a new central defender this summer, and a new name has emerged as an option – Lazio’s Spanish rock Mario Gila.
Following the eight goals conceded against PSG over two legs and injuries to Trevoh Chalobah and Levi Colwill, ask most Chelsea fans what they want in the summer window and it will be a new centre-back.
Chelsea have plenty of options in the middle of the defence, with Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Jorrel Hato, Tosin Adarabioyo, Mamadou Sarr and Josh Acheampong also options. A major reshuffle is needed.
It’s time to bin the five-year plan, Todd 😡
Joe Cole is absolutely right.
Scott Minto has ordered Chelsea to sign a “world-class” centre-back, and now the club are supposedly interested in signing Mario Gila. It would be a change in tactic, with Gila already a proven Serie A player.
Chelsea considering a move to sign Lazio’s Mario Gila
According to a report from Defensa Central, Chelsea are among the clubs considering a move to land Lazio’s impressive centre-back Gila. The defender has been with Lazio since the summer of 2022.

Clocking up 113 appearances for the Serie A side, this is a player who has also been called up to the Spain squad and came through the Real Madrid academy to play twice at senior level, which is notoriously rare.
Chelsea are not alone, however. Both AC Milan and Inter are ready to sign Gila, who is rated at £26m. Half of the fee will go to Real Madrid, who still own 50% of the player’s rights. His deal ends in June 2027.
Chelsea need to make room before signing another defender
Above, eight names are listed, including Chalobah and Colwill. That is eight options Chelsea have in the middle of the defence, currently in Liam Rosenior’s squad. Then, there are two more defenders on loan.

Axel Disasi is thriving at West Ham and Aaron Anselmino ended a loan at Dortmund to join Strasbourg in January. Chelsea need to sort out their own ranks before they start buying more, like Lazio ace Gila.
Reports say Chelsea are open to the sales of Chalobah, Tosin and Badiashile, even if Chalobah has been the best central defender of Rosenior’s reign. But plenty need to leave the club before signings come in.
