John Asiata is expected to line up for Hull FC against Leeds Rhinos on Sunday afternoon. However, head coach John Cartwright has confirmed he has been ‘limited’ in what he can do in training this week.

The loose forward played two big stints and was in the wars against Leigh Leopards last Saturday afternoon, receiving on-field treatment after bending awkwardly in a tackle in the second half.

And given that Asiata is just three games back after a 26-week layoff with a hamstring tear, precaution has been the word since, with the player pulling through the Leigh game and set to have his minutes managed against the Rhinos.

“He’s been a bit limited with his training this week, but thank god, he came through,” Cartwright, speaking to Hull Live, said. “With the injuries that he’s had, he’s come through good.

“He played bigger minutes than I planned last week; the fact that we were in the game and he’s a big part of our attack, so we probably kept him out there a touch longer than we were initially going to.

“We’ll continue to look after him in training and during games and maximise the amount of times he’s available to us.”

Elsewhere, Cartwright also provided some good news on young outside back Roman Dawson, with the 20-year-old only picking up a minor knee issue on his comeback game against Hull KR reserves last Sunday afternoon.

Dawson has been out for nearly two years with back-to-back ACL ruptures, the first suffered against Huddersfield Giants back in 2024 before a second rupture in pre-season training in January last year.

The winger crossed for two tries but left the field in discomfort before half-time. The knock was to his other knee, but the player has avoided any serious blow and is expected to play against St Helens reserves in the club’s next second string game next month.

“The poor kid has been stuck in a medical room for two years,” Cartwright said. “Anyone who’s had recovery from that sort of surgery will tell you it’s not pretty. He’s had two of them and our first thought was he might have got another one.

“He was down and out after the game but we got some good news on that. He will probably only be out for a couple of weeks. He scored a couple of tries in his first game, which was good for him. Hopefully he’ll be back for the next reserve game. We’re not fully sure on the extent of the injury, but it’s not major – that’s the main thing.”

Meanwhile, Hull remain without Will Pryce (ACL), Harvey Barron (ankle), Joe Batchelor (calf), Jed Cartwright (hamstring), Herman Ese’ese (Achilles), and Ryan Westerman (ankle). The likes of Barron and Batchelor could be back next month.

“It’s as we have reported – they are what they are they,” Cartwright added. “There’s no short term injuries. They will all be out medium to long. We’ve just to keep working hard as a squad now until we start getting the troops back.”
