For those who were children or teenagers in the 1980s and 1990s, Neighbours holds a nostalgic charm. Whether you tuned in after school (post-Blue Peter) or with a hangover at lunchtime while a student, many of us can remember the Neighbours cast from three decades ago more readily than the stars of the latest Netflix series we’ve binged.

The daytime soap aired from 1985 to 2025, having been conceived by television executive Reg Watson, making it the longest-running drama series in Australian television history. However, its journey wasn’t without hurdles, with some networks initially rejecting it. One labelled it as one of their “biggest missed opportunities”. It was also cancelled in Sydney shortly after its debut.

Neighbours first graced UK screens on BBC One in October 1986, where it remained for 22 years before transitioning to Channel 5 in 2008. After being dropped by Channel 5 in 2022, Amazon picked up the baton until the show’s conclusion on 11 December 2025, marking a 40-year run. The soap served as a launchpad for international superstars such as Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Guy Pearce. However, the whereabouts of other cast members remain less publicised.

She returned to Neighbours to reprise her role as Jane in 2018 and again in 2020.

She has been married to director Paul Moloney since 1989. When Neighbours finished for good in 2025 she said: “Thank you for having me Neighbours family. It’s been an wonderful part of my life and I feel so lucky that I got to play a character as a teenager and then again as a middle aged woman, with children and grandchildren.”

Another of Neighbours’ original 12 characters, he landed the role initially auditioned for by Stefan Dennis (who went on to become Paul Robinson). Following his departure from Neighbours, he found work in a pub but battled to handle fame alongside deteriorating mental health, turning to alcohol, painkillers and amphetamines. In 2015, he opened up to the Herald Sun about going through “hell” and how fellow cast members including Craig McLachlan and Guy Pearce were unable to help him.

Many of us still shudder at the memory of Harold tumbling off a rock, leaving only his glasses behind in a rockpool. Apologies for bringing that up again.

Ian joined Neighbours as Harold in 1987 before leaving in 1991, only to make a dramatic return five years later, albeit suffering from amnesia. He remained on the show until 2008 and then again until 2022, making him one of the soap’s longest-serving stars.

In 2015, the then 76 year old became the face of a new video series, Ask Grandad, supporting teachers who deliver health and sexual wellness education in schools. Now aged 87, he expressed his joy in December 2025 at having outlived a terminal cancer diagnosis. He also had a thriving music career, notably with the track, Mona. He’s remained active in film and television but last year pulled out of an Australian stage version of Cluedo following opposition to his involvement five years after being acquitted of assault and indecent assault charges.

Writing on Instagram, he stated: “In the hours and days that followed, I was targeted in a social media campaign from within the theatre community, which I was devastated to see has then impacted those involved in the production. I therefore feel that it is best for the production and those involved for me to withdraw.”
