Hollyoaks’ Rex Gallagher is set to take a big step as he experiments with his gender expression. The character has been wearing dresses and other women’s clothing in secret, with only grandad Froggy Black and co-worker Ro Hutchinson aware – but he’s terrified of his fiancé Ste Hay finding out.
In scenes set to air next week, Ro suggests Rex go to a drag night, so he can try going out in a dress and heels in public without fear of judgement.

When Ste interrupts them, Rex says it’s a suggestion for the stag do. Later on, Ste is knee deep in wedding preparation while Rex tries on the suit his fiancé has ordered for him.
Rex then confides in Froggy about the drag night suggestion. Froggy, wanting Rex to be happy, suggests that he give it a go.
Stepping out in heels, a wig and a long dress, Rex makes his first public appearance in his new look.
The people around him welcome him and accept him, and he finds himself truly warmed by the response.

Will this give him the courage to open up to Ste?
Recent scenes have seen the wedding take on a different meaning, as Ste proposed they moved it forward in order to give the Hutchinson family some happy memories in the middle of Diane’s battle with terminal cancer.
Hollyoaks airs on Mondays-Wednesdays with its Channel 4 streaming premiere at 7am, then an E4 broadcast the same night at 7pm. Full episodes are also released on YouTube a week after their Channel 4 release.
