Police have issued an update after a man was left fighting for his life in hospital following a “hit and run” incident in Maghull on Tuesday night (March 17). Merseyside Police were called to Hall Lane in Maghull at around 9.30pm after a cyclist was hit by a car.

It was reported that a white Kia Ceed was involved in a collision with a cyclist near to the swing bridge at the canal on Hall Lane. The driver of the car fled from the scene, police said.

A passing member of the public found the cyclist and called the emergency services.

Emergency services attended the scene and the cyclist, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

An investigation was launched and on Wednesday (March 18), a 23-year-old man from Maghull was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop and a Kia Ceed seized.

He was interviewed by detectives and has since been released under investigation whilst enquiries continue.

Detective Sergeant Kurt Timpson, the Lead Investigating Officer from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This was a serious incident which has left a man in a life-threatening condition in hospital.

“My priority is to get answers for him and his family. While an arrest was made, I continue to appeal to the public for help with our investigation.

“In particular, I am keen to speak to anybody who saw a white Kia Ceed, registered in 2024 in the local area either immediately before this collision took place or during the time after. The vehicle was located close to the collision scene by an off duty police officer.

“It had sustained damage and it is likely that people will have seen this vehicle and not realised the significance of what had happened. Those people could help us as we piece together what took place.

“I also appeal to local residents and businesses who may have CCTV or doorbell cameras and who have not yet spoken to my officers to review their footage. If you believe that you have captured footage of the Kia Ceed before or after the collision, please get in touch.

“Finally, I want to appeal to anybody who was in the locality on Tuesday evening who may have dashcam in their vehicles. Both front and rear cameras can often record vital evidence without the driver being aware.

“Please review your systems and again I appeal for you to get in touch if you can help”.
