It follows a series of appeals by Cheshire Police following a number of reports of bicycles being stolen from high schools in Warrington.

On Thursday, the force released CCTV stills of a man officers wished to speak to in connection with their investigation.

On Friday afternoon, officers at St Gregory’s High School investigating the thefts noticed a person matching the suspect in their appeals.

Perry Stanley, aged 33 and of Meadway in Widnes, has since been charged with three counts of theft of a pedal cycle and one of going equipped for theft.

The theft charges allege that he stole three bikes worth a combined £2,312.47 from two women and a man, with two thefts allegedly occurring at St Gregory’s and one at Great Sankey High School.

The going equipped for theft charge alleges that he was dressed wearing a balaclava, woolly hat, black puffer jacket, and gloves for use in the course of theft.

He appeared before Chester Magistrates’ Court today, Saturday, where he denied the offences and was remanded in custody to stand trial next month.

The force’s Warrington West Police team said: “Officers from the Warrington West Beat Team were at St Gregory’s High School on Friday afternoon, making enquiries into recent bike thefts.

“After less than five minutes, who should appear but a man matching exactly the description of our suspect from our appeal on Thursday, eyeing up more bicycles outside the school.

“He was swiftly detained and arrested.

“Much later on into the night, the 33-year-old man, of Widnes, was charged with three counts of theft of pedal cycle – two from St Gregory’s High School and one from Great Sankey High School – as well as going equipped to steal.

“He appeared on Saturday morning at Chester Magistrates’ Court, where he was further remanded into custody until April 21, when he will stand trial.

“A big thank you to everyone who got in touch with sightings following our previous appeal. Your information has really helped.

“Please remember to properly secure your bike.”
