The former Ireland fly-half has been heavily linked with a return home in recent years, with many tipping him as a potential successor to Andy Farrell as head coach of the Ireland national rugby union team.

O’Gara has also been mentioned in connection with Munster Rugby, the province where he made his name as a player, but he has now admitted he regrets previously engaging with that speculation.

Speaking to the Irish Examiner, O’Gara made it clear that discussing other roles while still in charge at La Rochelle was a mistake.

“Andy is doing a brilliant job with Ireland. I don’t have a leg to stand on in terms of the Irish job.”

Despite the growing noise around his future, O’Gara insists his focus remains firmly on his current role in France.

“With Munster, who knows in terms of the future, but where I am mentally at the minute, I wouldn’t be swapping any job in the world for my club job.”

The La Rochelle boss admitted that even entertaining talk of other jobs can have a negative impact within a squad.

“When you start talking about other alternatives as a job, you send a bad message to the players, to the club president.”

As a result, O’Gara has now shut down any public discussion about his next move, underlining his commitment to the club—for now.

“Ever since that I haven’t spoken about another job and I never will speak about another job because I am very happy here at this brilliant club.”

While his long-term future may lie on the international stage, O’Gara’s immediate priority remains continuing his work in La Rochelle until at least 2027.
