Super League

Round six of Super League was another intriguing one, but it didn’t pass without its injury issues with a number of players picking up knocks whilst in action for their clubs.

Huddersfield Giants produced the biggest shock of the round as they stunned league leaders Wigan Warriors at the Brick Community Stadium. The Giants, who are without a head coach, beat Wigan 34-16 on Saturday afternoon to underline just what they are capable of when they have their first choice spine at their disposal.

Hull KR thumped St Helens 52-10 on Friday night to finally find some traction in Super League, while Castleford Tigers scored 40 points in victory over Bradford Bulls as they bounced back from their heavy defeat at Warrington Wolves in round five.

Hull FC, Wakefield Trinity and Leigh Leopards all picked up wins too before Leeds Rhinos marked Super League’s 30th birthday with a 26-22 win over Warrington Wolves at Headingley.

Here’s a look at the injuries that occurred over the weekend.

Super League injuries after round six

Thursday night was one that Castleford fans will cherish, but it came at a price with winger Semi Valemei picking up a head knock while trying to put a hit on Caleb Aekins. He went on to fail a HIA and he’ll miss Rivals Round as a result.

Another man who could miss Rivals Round is Mark Percival. The centre only returned to the Saints side a couple of weeks ago, but he was withdrawn at half-time on Friday night, with St Helens already trailing by some distance.

Speaking after the game, Paul Rowley revealed Percival had been struggling with a leg issue and might not have played had the club had more options in the outside backs.

Leigh Leopards boss will be checking on two players this week ahead of the clash with Warrington Wolves, with Tesi Niu and Jack Hughes picking up issues. Niu suffered knee and hamstring issues, while Hughes was struggling with an ankle issue late on.

Warrington’s Kelepi Tanginoa could also miss that game after picking up a groin issue on Sunday at Leeds Rhinos.

York Knights have picked up a few injuries this week, with Danny Richardson dropping out of the fold the day before Friday’s clash with Wakefield Trinity after suffering a quad injury in captain’s run. Ben Jones-Bishop has a foot issue, while Sam Wood suffered a fractured hand and Toa Mata’afa picked up an elbow issue.

Huddersfield Giants’ Asher O’Donnell took a blow to the head on Saturday before Ben Garcia (failed HIA) and Alrix Da Costa (leg) picked up issues on Sunday as Catalans Dragons lost at Hull FC.
