Manchester United have been afforded a chance to take stock during the international break. While many of Michael Carrick’s squad are away with their national teams, focus has turned to the club’s plans for the summer transfer window.

The team’s recent good run of form has put United firmly in contention to qualify for the Champions League, sitting six points ahead of Liverpool in fifth. Their revival under Carrick and possible return to Europe’s top club competition make the club an increasingly attractive destination for players.

Midfield is an area United will want to prioritise in the transfer market as Casemiro is set to leave in the summer. Nottingham Forest and England midfielder Elliot Anderson is among those to have been touted as his potential replacement at Old Trafford.

Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali is another of the club’s reported midfield targets. Here, Mirror Football takes a closer look at some of the headlines surrounding Carrick’s team.

Elliot Anderson addresses future

Anderson has responded to a question about his future at Forest while on England duty. The 23-year-old has become a key member of the Three Lions squad under Thomas Tuchel and has answered whether the transfer speculation has been a distraction as he looks to cement his place in the team.

“We’ve obviously got the World Cup this summer, so all my eyes are on that and playing for England,” Anderson said. “I’ve obviously got the badge on now, so that’s what I’m thinking about at the moment.”

It has previously been reported that Forest have placed an £80million price tag on Anderson, who has also been linked with Manchester City. He has earned plaudits for his performances this season, despite Forest fighting for Premier League survival.

Anderson’s immediate focus will be on playing in England’s upcoming game against Japan on Tuesday. He was not involved in the team’s 1-1 draw with Uruguay last week as Tuchel fielded an experimental lineup.

Having watched Jordan Henderson and James Garner start in his position, Anderson said: “We’re all sort of competing with each other but we’re all really good mates within the group, so there’s definitely a great balance, the competitiveness is definitely there and we’re really enjoying it.”

Sandro Tonali update

Newcastle United are said to be relaxed about their chances of keeping Sandro Tonali. The Italy international has been the subject of much transfer speculation and has been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

ChronicleLive has reported that Newcastle are calm regarding Tonali’s future. The 25-year-old has a contract that runs until 2029, with the option for another year.

However, it is said that the Magpies are frustrated with the player’s agent, Giuseppe Riso, who has openly discussed the possibility of his client leaving the club. When previously speaking about Tonali to Italian media, he said: “If he shines at the World Cup, will City or Arsenal be hot on his heels?

“I don’t know, but it’s very likely. Everyone is waiting for the World Cup; then a thousand scenarios will unfold, but it all kicks off after the World Cup.”
