The council has made two big changes to its fortnightly collections to include some of our most common trash

People living in Cornwall can now put a number of new items in their recycling bags – including sweet wrappers and crisp packets.

From March 16, Cornwall Council is allowing cartons and plastic wrapping to be added to households’ fortnightly kerbside collections.

It’s a huge change from previous rules, which did not accept Tetra Paks and which saw soft plastics needing to be recycled via special collection points.

The new rules mean you can now recycle plastic bags such as bread bags and frozen vegetable bags as well as cartons and Tetra Paks, including milk cartons, soup cartons and milk substitute cartons for things like oat and almond milk.

Plastic carrier bags, sweet and chocolate wrappers, crisp packets and other foil lined packaging like coffee bags, cheese, fish and meat wrappings, plastic film lids and sleeves, cling film, bubble wrap, pet food pouches and fruit and vegetable net bags have also all been added to the list of things you can recycle.

If you are recycling cartons, the council advises you to rinse and squash them down before putting them in your red recycling bag for collection.

Any plastic bags and wrapping should be put in a carrier or bread bag tied at the top.

If you have space, pop it into your red recycling bag. If you don’t have space, place the tied bag on top of your black box or tuck it in alongside your other recycling bags to stop it blowing away.

You still can’t recycle polystyrene, black plastic and plastic toys in your red bag.

You can learn more about the changes via the council website, here and what to put in each recycling bag here.
