Somerset Council said the road, located near Tamsyn Froom Architecture, between Chard and Clayhanger, was closed for safety reasons, although access is being maintained for local properties.
The defect was reported to the council, and a spokesperson from the council said investigations found it was caused by badger activity.
Before repair works can begin, a license from Natural England before repair work can start as badgers are a protected species.
A spokesperson for the council said: “The defect in the road has been caused by badgers burrowing under the surface, causing a partial collapse. The road is closed for safety reasons, although access is being maintained for local properties.
“The council is now working with contractors to obtain a license from Natural England before repair work can start, as badgers are a European protected species and it is a criminal offence to disturb them.

“It’s really important for people to report defects when they see them – our online portal is quick and easy to use, and images can be uploaded. This is the best way to alert us – it goes straight to the team who can assess and schedule a repair depending on the urgency.
“For very serious defects on major roads, this could be 2-24 hours, while other repairs will be between 7-28 days or later if they are non-urgent.
“Please report road defects by visiting www.somerset.gov.uk and search report a problem on the road.”
