Ruby Bishop, 22, is ranked the fourth best player in her sport in Great Britain and 35th in the International Tennis Federation Wheelchair world rankings.

But Ms Bishop, who has cerebral palsy, said she was held back from taking part in PE lessons during her school days.

She started playing tennis after attending a ‘have a go’ Tennis Foundation day, which led to her representing Great Britain at junior Grand Slams.

She became world number three in the girls’ rankings and Great Britain’s number one and now competes on the senior professional tour full time.

Ms Bishop is campaigning for a national change through Ruby’s Law, which would include sports wheelchairs being provided as standard equipment in every school and teachers trained to deliver inclusive PE lessons.

She recently returned to her former school, Sprowston Community Academy based in Cannerby Lane, to donate a sports wheelchair.

She said: “Walking back in as an athlete was a full-circle moment.

“Delivering the first RMA Multisport Wheelchair in the UK, aligned with my campaign for inclusive PE, made that moment even more powerful.

“Seeing my former teachers jump in, test the chair and fully embrace disability inclusion was incredibly uplifting.

“Their willingness to learn, to lead and to adapt shows what true commitment to young people looks like.

“This wheelchair represents everything my campaign is fighting for: access, confidence, representation and a PE environment where every student can participate fully.

“It gives staff the tools to teach disability sport properly and ensures no student is left watching from the sidelines.

“Every school should have one – because inclusion should be as standard as any other piece of sports equipment.”

Liz Wood, head of Sprowston Community Academy, said: “It was lovely to welcome Ruby back to Sprowston.

“We are really proud of her achievements and it is fantastic to see her doing so well.

“It was also great to be the first school to be gifted a wheelchair by Ruby. We want all students to feel included in sports and PE and the wheelchair will help to support this further.”
