A man has been arrested and city streets cordoned off after police were called to reports of a man with a gun. City centre streets including Ranelagh Street, Button Street, Mathew Street, Victoria Street and part of Whitechapel are cordoned off this morning (April 6).

Police were called around 4.45am to reports of one man threatening another with a gun during a fight near Clayton Square. Merseyside Police said there is “no suggestion” that a firearm was used and no reports of any injuries.

A 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm without a certificate. He is currently in custody.

No firearm has been recovered and police said enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.

Officers have been seen going in and out of businesses within the cordon.
