Daniil Medvedev threw his racket six times during a furious outburst as he suffered a shock 6-0, 6-0 defeat by Matteo Berrettini in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters.

The world No10 was beaten ruthlessly in only 49 minutes by Berrettini, a former world No6 at present ranked No90, losing a match without winning a game for the first time in his career at tour level.

This result makes Berrettini, a wild card in Monte Carlo, the first player in ten years to “double-bagel” an opponent ranked in the top ten of the ATP Tour. It is only the fifth time it has happened since the rankings were first published in 1973.

The previous time such a scoreline occurred on the men’s tour was in the quarter-finals of this tournament last year, when Alex de Minaur defeated Grigor Dimitrov. Not since 2016, when David Goffin beat Thomas Berdych at the Rome Masters, has a player in the top ten suffered such an overwhelming defeat.

Medvedev won only 17 points across the match, nine of which came on his own serve. He did not have a single game point during his service games, and after he was broken for the sixth time in the match to go 2-0 down in the second set, he let his frustrations get the better of him.

The 30-year-old threw his racket six times, first launching it to the back of the court before continuously smashing it into the clay while walking to his seat courtside.

“I think it was one of the best performances of my life,” Berrettini, a Wimbledon finalist in 2021, said afterwards. “I think I missed three shots in the entire match and it is not easy against a tricky player like Daniil.”

However, this was a particularly poor display from Medvedev, who landed only 36 per cent of his first serves and committed 27 unforced errors.

The Russian had enjoyed a successful 2026 up to this point, having won titles at the Brisbane Open and the Dubai Open. At Indian Wells last month he defeated Carlos Alcaraz and Jack Draper on the way to the final before he was beaten by Jannik Sinner.

Berrettini, 29, will now advance to the third round having yet to drop a game after his first-round opponent, Roberto Bautista Agut, retired at 4-0. The Italian will play either Brazil’s João Fonseca or Arthur Rinderknech next.
