His terms are currently due to run out at the end of this season, his third as head coach after replacing Daryl Powell.
The 37-year-old has steered The Wire to a Super League semi-final and two Challenge Cup Finals over that time, although the league campaign was a disappointing one in 2025 albeit with some mitigation around a high injury count.
“I’m really enjoying it at Warrington, we’re having a great time. My family are really settled and we’re loving our time at the club,” said Burgess, who is in his first head coach appointment.
“We’ve had a couple of early discussions. I have a great relationship with Simon (Moran, owner), so it’ll be one of those where we’ll go for dinner one night and we’ll talk something out.
“But for now we’re just getting on with business. I’m pretty comfortable and I’m really enjoying my time here so we’ll see what happens over the next couple of weeks.”
He had been in the mix for the head coach role with new NRL club Perth Bears for 2027 but Mal Meninga was appointed after the interview process was completed last year.
It is likely that club chiefs, and Burgess himself, are maintaining a watching brief on how the season continues to unfold before commitments are made.
So far, Wire have won seven out of the eight matches they have played in Super League and the Challenge Cup in 2026.
And they sit top of the table, with a game in hand, as they prepare to face Leigh Leopards in the Challenge Cup semi-finals this Saturday.
Beyond the results, Burgess’ willingness to hand appearances to the club’s young stars that have risen through the Scholarship and Academy ranks is known to be well received at the top level internally.
There has been continued speculation around Burgess being in the mix for the part-time England job for the World Cup this autumn and he was asked if taking on that additional appointment would sway him to stay on these shores rather than returning to Australia, where he became a playing legend with South Sydney Rabbitohs.
“I’m English, I love England and I’m in no hurry to get back to Australia. The hard thing about being here is that I have two older kids in Australia – that’s the hard reality of it,” said Burgess.
“Like I said, we’re really enjoying ourselves in England. It helps that we’re winning games.
“Warrington’s a wonderful club and I’ve got a lot of respect for Simon and he’s been wonderful with me here.
“We’ll work something out but for now we’re pretty calm, we’re all settled, we’ve got a good understanding of each other.
“In time we’ll talk.”
Asked about his relationship with the club’s owner, he said: “Simon’s really passionate about the club.
“He’s a very busy man with (his business) SJM so he’s not here day to day but he’s across everything. He’s a very passionate Warrington fan. I respect who he is. He’s a top guy.”
And then asked if he wants the England job, which has become vacant after Shaun Wane stepped away earlier this year, he said: “I’m passionate about English rugby league and England as a country, and especially the World Cup is in Australia.
“I’ve actually not thought about it too deeply. When you ask me about it, I’m excited.
“I don’t know what the process is or what’s happening at the moment. I guess in time we’ll see what happens.”
Asked if he’d applied formally, he said: “No, nothing’s formalised.”
