Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic future remains a focus this summer.

As well as the lack of transfer activity, fans are having to deal with the fact that Rodgers could leave Celtic at the end of this season.

The Celtic manager has admitted that he has spoken to Dermot Desmond about his Parkhead future over the past two weeks, but as it stands right now, no new deal has been offered.

So does Desmond really want Rodgers to stay at Celtic or will he quite happily let him go when his contract expires?

Celtic legend Martin O’Neill offers his insight on what the majority shareholder thinks of the Hoops boss.

Martin O’Neill enjoys a close friendship with Dermot Desmond and he thinks that the Celtic supremo ‘would want’ Rodgers to stay at Celtic beyond his current deal.

O’Neill said in the Daily Record, “From the fans’ viewpoint, that’s something that they would probably like to know as there’s a bit of uncertainty around it.

“I don’t know Brendan’s situation in terms of I have not been speaking to him about that, that is none of my business.

“But I do know the fellow he’s dealing with, and that would be Dermot. And I would think from a distance that Dermot would want Brendan to stay at the football club.

“Brendan had a good year last year – excellent getting through in the Champions League. I think he would want to try and push even further to try to make that second group stage.

“So, I can only imagine that there is a mutual understanding between the two of them.

“I would be very surprised if Brendan were to leave. I think Celtic would want him, and if Brendan was saying, ‘Oh, I’ll just see this one out,’. I would bet it would only be his choice.”

If Desmond wants Rodgers to stay at Celtic, what’s the hold up?

If what O’Neill says is true, and Desmond does want Rodgers to stay at Celtic, then what’s the hold up?

The majority Celtic shareholder is the man who pulls the strings at the club so you would have to imagine that what Desmond wants, he gets at the club.

Maybe there is differing views when it comes to Celtic’s transfer policy and that’s what’s holding up any potential deal.

Whatever the reason may be, both parties need to get together and sort it out before the uncertainty threatens to derail Celtic’s season.
