Racehorse Gold Dancer has died after winning the Mildmay Novices’ Chase. The horse, who was ridden by Paul Townend picked up an injury jumping the final fence in the Grade One race at Ladies Day.

At the last fence, Gold Dancer landed flat on his hind legs. Townend quickly dismounted after the horse crossed the finish line.

He received treatment from a large team of medical staff but the Racing Post has announced the sad news of his death.

Gigginstown’s Eddie O’Leary confirmed the worst following Gold Dancer’s victory. He said: “He’s been put down. He broke his back. It’s terribly sad for the horse. What could Paul Townend do?

“He felt fine, it was just when he pulled up that something was wrong.”

ITV added: “The winner was immediately attended by veterinary team but sadly could not be saved.”

They passed on their regards to the team that looked after the seven-year-old Willie Mullins trained horse.
