Police made three arrests today (April 11) during the Devon Derby which saw a “heightened police presence”.

The arrests were made for entering the pitch, for throwing a missile in the stands and for common assault on a steward.

Officers had warned Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City fans that they would not tolerate anti-social behaviour and said plans appeared to have worked well, with minimal trouble.

Devon and Cornwall Officers, working with British Transport Police, escorted a large number of Exeter City fans from the Plymouth rail station to Home Park today [Saturday April 11] without incident, while police vehicles were seen on the A38 escorting more fans from the east of Devon in a line of coaches.

Similarly, Argyle fans were monitored as they entered the grounds although a number of supporters were seen running across the pitch before the match began, although it has not been confirmed which team they supported.

Match commander Supt Vicky Howell told Plymouth Live this evening: “This was a significant fixture with a well known rivalry, and I’m pleased that the overwhelming majority of fans came to enjoy the match in the right spirit.

“Our officers took a visible, proportionate and proactive approach throughout the day which helped prevent issues from escalating and ensured people could enjoy the occasion safely. Whilst there was a small number of arrests, this reflects our commitment to taking action where necessary.

“I would like to thank supporters, residents, and our partners, particularly the football clubs, for their cooperation in making this a successful operation.

“We arrested three people associated, one for entering the pitch, one for throwing a missile in the stands and another for common assault on a steward.”
