White wines from the Rhône Valley are carving out a stronger presence in the UK, with production levels and sustainability credentials on the up.

Rhône Valley white wines are gaining traction in the UK market, as the category continues to build momentum alongside the region’s more established reds.

According to new figures, white wine production accounted for 13% of Rhône output in 2025, bringing it in line with rosé production in the region for the first time. The Rhône Valley is home to 27 AOCs authorised to produce white wines across both its northern and southern areas.

Made from 15 permitted grape varieties, including White Grenache, Viognier, Clairette Blanche, Roussanne and Marsanne, Rhône whites span a broad stylistic range. Styles run from fresh and vibrant expressions through to richer, more complex wines, appealing to a wide spectrum of consumers and trade professionals.

Sustainability focus strengthens

This growth comes alongside a continued push on sustainability. For the 2025 vintage, 63% of Rhône AOP production is part of an environmental approach, while 25% of wines are now certified organic.

Manchester event to spotlight category

The category will take centre stage later this month at Rhône in White, a dedicated event taking place in Manchester on 29 April 2026. The event will showcase 100 different cuvées, with a trade tasting running from 11am to 5pm and masterclasses led by Rhône specialist Matt Walls.

A consumer session will follow from 6pm to 8pm, offering an immersive tasting experience designed to introduce attendees to the diversity of Rhône whites in a more informal setting.

Three key styles

Rhône Valley white wines can broadly be grouped into three main styles.

Fresh & Lively wines are defined by crisp acidity and citrus-led aromatics, often produced from Grenache blanc, Bourboulenc and Piquepoul Blanc grown in cooler, well-drained soils. These wines are typically made using reductive winemaking techniques and are suited to apéritifs or lighter dishes.

Fruity & Round styles offer a fuller palate, combining tropical and stone fruit flavours with a balanced, rounded mouthfeel. Made from grapes such as Grenache, Clairette and Bourboulenc, they pair well with white fish, light meats and mild cheeses.

At the richer end of the spectrum, Rich & Complex wines deliver layered profiles of fruit, spice and minerality. Produced from varieties including Viognier, Roussanne and Marsanne, these wines are often harvested overripe and aged in oak, developing notes of toast and honey.

Beyond still wines

The Rhône Valley also produces a range of sweet and sparkling white wines. Muscat de Beaumes de Venise and Rasteau Vins Doux Naturels offer aromatic sweetness suited to dessert pairings, while sparkling styles such as Clairette de Die, Saint-Péray and Crémant de Die provide fresher, lighter options.

As interest continues to grow, Rhône Valley white wines are positioning themselves as an increasingly important category within the UK market, offering diversity across style, terroir and occasion.
