In 1961, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin brought a small doll on to humanity’s first ever spaceflight, while in 1990, Snoopy was flown on the Nasa space shuttle Colombia.

In 2023, Shaun the Sheep was sent into space as part of Nasa’s Artemis I mission to travel around the moon and back.

The 16cm-tall model was a passenger in a capsule blasted into orbit by the rocket and covered around 1.5 million miles before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean.

After the animal starred in a sci-fi film called Farmageddon, the agency reached out to his creators to ask whether he would go on the mission.
