Twenty-four players of Dorchester Tennis and Squash Club enjoyed a sunny day on the courts for the Peter Cox Fun Handicap Tennis Tournament on Easter Monday.

With the forecast in their favour, the event was bustling with mixed doubles matches.

The tournament, named in memory of Peter Cox, a former club member who championed the enjoyable side of tennis, took place once again, using a handicap scoring system to level the playing field among all participants.

During the initial round-robin phase, competitors were randomly partnered and pitted against different opponents in three separate mixed doubles matches.

The aim here was for individuals to rack up as many games and wins as possible.

At the end of this phase, the top four women and men advanced to the semi-finals, gearing up for a more competitive stage of the tournament.

After a thrilling day of tennis, coupled with a pot-luck lunch supplied by all entrants, Lorraine Slowther and Stephen Hockaday, both previous tournament winners, triumphed over club chair Al Clark and his wife Ros in their semi-final match.

In the other semi-final, Charmian Wylde and James Warne overpowered Sophie Wells and Keith Mason, winning their match 6-4.

The final was an exciting display of skill, with all eyes on the consistent duo, Slowther and Hockaday, as they worked to tame Warne’s serve and claim a 6-3 victory.

Spectators watched from the clubhouse and viewing platform.

The prizes and the coveted trophy were presented by club and tennis chair Al Clark, who extended a vote of thanks to everyone who participated.
