Team Visma | Lease a Bike’s young sensation Matthew Brennan has powered to an uphill sprint victory on stage 5 of the 2025 Tour de Pologne, holding off compatriot Ben Turner in a British one-two finish.

Four riders took it upon themselves to ignite the race and form a breakaway early on stage 5. Those attackers being: Jensen Plowright (Alpecin – Deceuninck), Martin Svrček (Soudal – Quick-Step), Patrick Gamper (Team Jayco AlUla) and Huub Artz (Intermarché – Wanty).

Heading into the last 30km of the day, the break’s advantage over the peloton had been cut to just over a minute and a half, meaning their hopes of fighting it out for the victory were very much in the balance. With a final kicker climb to come before the line however, the catch wasn’t a completely done deal for the bunch by any means.

As the race entered the last 20km, the break started to split up with Artz and Plowright powering clear of Gamper and Svrcek. The peloton though, was now breathing down their necks at just 40 seconds down. That reigniting of the racing at the front seemed to have kick-started the race for the stage once again though, and the time gap began to go out once more, giving Artz and Plowright a minute’s lead at 15km to go. Both were caught by the time the race entered the last 10km however, with the first signs of GC action having increased the pace at the front of the peloton again.

From there, Israel – Premier Tech attempted to take on the race, firstly through Matthew Riccitello and then Marco Frigo. Neither were able to properly snap the elastic however. Next, a move by Alberto Bettiol looked a lot more dangerous, and with UAE’s Jan Christen locked to the Italian’s back wheel, the pair held a narrow lead into the last 6km. Despite the danger of this move however, Bettiol and Christen were caught at 1.5km to go.

With that over, all attention turned towards the punchy sprint finale. Lidl-Trek held control at the front, but once Matthew Brennan opened his sprint there was no stopping the Visma starlet, despite a strong fight to the line from his compatriot Ben Turner.
