As Rory McIlroy proudly slipped on his second Green Jacket, his wife Erica Stoll turned heads wearing a striking $100,000 (€85,000) Patek Philippe Twenty-4 rose gold watch.
The 36 year old McIlroy made history as only the fourth golfer to successfully defend the Masters title, joining an exclusive club alongside Jack Nicklaus, Sir Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods.
During his victory speech, McIlroy made a point of recognising Stoll for her unwavering support throughout the tournament and beyond — a tribute he had initially overlooked in his first winners’ remarks after clinching the career Grand Slam. Following the conclusion of the major, McIlroy posed for a family photograph alongside Stoll, their daughter Poppy, his mother Rosie and his father Gerry.
Watch enthusiast and influencer Chad Alexander was quick to identify the lavish timepiece adorning Stoll’s wrist. McIlroy’s caddie Harry Diamond also has plenty to celebrate, with reports indicating he stands to pocket around €380,000 for his role in the triumph — typically equivalent to 10% of McIlroy’s winner’s cheque of approximately €3.8m.
Alexander also noted that Stoll wore a $95,000 (€81,000) rose gold Patek Philippe Nautilus with a diamond bezel during the traditional par three competition on the Wednesday prior. Notably, neither watch was an Omega, the brand that sponsors McIlroy, suggesting that Stoll has her own distinct sense of style and chooses not to wear timepieces from her husband’s commercial partners.
Stoll is under no obligation to wear clothing or accessories from McIlroy’s sponsors, nor is Diamond. That said, given the longstanding and steadfast friendship the caddie has shared with McIlroy for nearly 30 years, the World No. 2 golfer may choose to present his devoted companion with a fine watch as a token of his gratitude, reports the Irish Mirror.
Diamond faced constant criticism from golf fans and commentators throughout the 11 years McIlroy went without winning a major. When that lengthy drought came to an end in deeply emotional scenes at Augusta last year, the Holywood man paid tribute to his loyal friend’s crucial contribution on the course, reports the Mirror.
Following his first Masters triumph, McIlroy said: “I’ve known Harry since I was seven years old. I met him on the putting green at Holywood Golf Club. We’ve had so many good times together. He’s been like a big brother to me throughout my life.
“To be able to share this with him after all the close calls we’ve had, and all the [nonsense] he’s had to take from people who don’t know anything about the game.
“This one is just as much his as it is mine. He’s a massive part of what I do, and I couldn’t think of anyone better to share it with.”
McIlroy will be hoping to replicate those emotional scenes when the PGA Championship tees off next month. Last year proved challenging for the two-time Masters winner, who ended up T47, trailing eventual victor Scottie Scheffler by 14 strokes.
