This beloved detective series has proved so compelling that devoted fans have watched the entire run in a single sitting.

Bergerac has returned to our television screens with its highly anticipated second series, and viewers have wasted no time plunging headfirst into the fresh set of six episodes.

The show, a reimagining of the BBC’s 1980s classic originally fronted by John Nettles, sees Damien Molony step into the shoes of iconic detective Jim Bergerac, navigating life as a widower and recovering alcoholic while unravelling complex cases on the island.

Writer Toby Whithouse’s contemporary reinvention of the beloved original has clearly resonated strongly with audiences since its launch last year, becoming the highest-rated series on television and streaming platform UandDrama in 2015.

In the second series, Bergerac faces one of his most challenging investigations when shocking events unfold at a wedding reception in Jersey. On the personal front, Jim tentatively re-enters the dating world, encouraged by his daughter Kim (Chloe Sweetlove), reports the Mirror.

His hopes of finding romance are modest until a chance encounter with Nicola (Camilla Beeput), an island visitor, changes everything.

The synopsis reads: “Romance is also in the air for Bergerac’s formidable mother-in-law Charlie Hungerford, who has found a new man in her life, the effervescent, charming Nigel. But in the same breath as meeting Nicola, Bergerac is pulled into his next big case when the groom at a wedding reception is found murdered in his hotel room.

“One thing is certain, someone at the wedding reception could be a killer, and Bergerac is determined to bring them to justice. What follows is a tale of police corruption, of dark family secrets and huge twists.”

Audiences have hailed the new series as “brilliant,” with many devotees watching all six episodes consecutively. On social media, one viewer posted: “That’s the new series of #bergerac binge watched. What a cast. I enjoyed it.”

Another enthusiast applauded: “It’s good to see Damien Maloney in a lead role. I enjoyed the series – better than the original series.”

Meanwhile, a further comment read: “Brilliant. Love it.” A third viewer compared the latest episodes with the inaugural series, writing: “I’ve just finished it! So so good, much better than S1. The only trouble now is that I have to wait another year until S3!!”

Previewing the new series, Damien suggested fans should anticipate “lots of twists and turns” and “all those wonderful elements that make a great detective series”.

The actor told Hello: “What I was really excited about series two was, was a chance to see a new side of Jim. Series one was defined by his grief. We’re now 18 months further down the line and people are starting to move on.”

He added: “His daughter Kim is moving on. She’s moving to a music school in England. Charlie Hungerford is moving on, she’s dating, and so Jim’s in danger of being left behind. His support network is kind of disappearing.

“So he is now tentatively, dare I say, reluctantly, dating and starting to put the building blocks to his life back in place. But of course, it wouldn’t be a good TV series if we didn’t challenge that.”
