A Merseyside Police inspector has urged those inside the chippy at the time to come forward

A murder probe has been launched after a man died this afternoon (Tuesday, April 21) following an attack inside a chippy in Stockbridge Village. At around 7.30pm on Friday, April 17, a 54-year-old man was reportedly assaulted inside The Village Chippy, off Leach Croft, by another man.

The incident was reported to police the following day by the North West Ambulance Service after the victim was taken to hospital with a serious head injury. The victim died this afternoon (Tuesday, April 21) and specialist officers are supporting his family at this time.

A post-mortem investigation will be carried out to establish the cause of death. A murder investigation is now underway and police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward as a matter of urgency.

A 25-year-old man from Stockbridge Village, who was arrested on suspicion of Section 18 wounding with intent, remains on conditional bail.

Detective Chief Inspector Cath Cummings said: “First and foremost, our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this tragic time.

“I know people living in the local community will be understandably upset and concerned, but I want them to be reassured that we are thoroughly investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident.

“A murder investigation is now underway and we are appealing for information. We know there were people inside The Village Chippy at the time, so if you haven’t already done so, please come forward if you have information.”
