And he says doing so was “a no-brainer” after the club confirmed a new contract for the 23-year-old academy graduate.

Thewlis – the club’s reigning Ken Kelly Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year – already had another two full seasons to run on his current contract but his new terms see him commit to The Wire until the end of 2030.

It is a contract that will take him to his Testimonial season, having debuted as a 17-year-old against Catalans Dragons back in June 2019.

A reliable presence either on the wing or at full-back, where he has been playing more recently due to injuries suffered by Cai Taylor-Wray, Thewlis has scored 61 tries and kicked 105 goals in his 127 Warrington appearances to date and he says being part of the club’s first ever Super League-winning squad was a major motivation.

“I got the option to go to 2030, and it was a no-brainer for me. I’m buzzing it’s done,” he said.

“I think the ambition of the club and that challenge of winning that Super League, I want to be a part of that, and this gives me the best opportunity to do that.

“We’re building something good this year, we’ve had a great start, but come the business end of the year, I can’t wait for that.”

Thewlis’ standing in the dressing room is reflected by the fact he was named as part of the club’s seven-strong leadership group during pre-season.

And head coach Sam Burgess says the leadership aspect of his game will only grow as time goes on.

“It’s fantastic for both Josh and the club to get his long-term future secured,” he said.

“He’s an important part of our squad, someone who’s growing as a leader in the group and is a big part of the club’s future.”
