The new collection service was introduced this month in line with Government requirements, with food waste collected in a separate caddy to your standard household waste bin.

All food scraps, fruit and vegetable peelings, meat and fish bones, tea bags, and coffee grounds should be put in the caddies.

Once the food waste is collected, it is transported to a specialist facility where it is converted into biogas and nutrient-rich fertiliser for the farming industry.

Warrington Borough Council has confirmed that 38 tonnes of food waste was collected in Warrington during the first week of the scheme.

In a statement, the council said: “Thank you, residents.

“In the first week alone of our new food waste collections, you helped to collect 38 tonnes of food waste – an amazing start to this Government‑funded recycling scheme.

“By using your food waste caddy each week, you are helping to reduce waste, cut emissions, and support greener energy.

“Remember to put your food waste caddy out every week.”
