APPRENTICE builder and rising Thai boxing talent Cain Sykes is preparing to represent England at the Muay Thai World Festival in Bangkok this June, as he looks to extend his impressive winning run on the international stage.
The 17-year-old, of Low Moor, enters the tournament in strong form, having secured victories in both of his bouts so far this year against closely matched opponents.
Reflecting on his February contest in Manchester, Sykes said: “I fought Jay Clough from Tyneside on the Hitman show, which is one of the biggest Muay Thai promotions in the North.
“He’s known as an exciting and courageous fighter, so it was a tough contest. We both really wanted the win and I was pleased to come through with a split decision.”
He followed that performance with another victory in March at the SKS Empire show in Walsall, where he overcame local fighter Zakariya Iman in a physically demanding bout.
“It was a very intense fight,” Sykes added. “Neither of us wore headgear, just elbow pads, so it was tough and competitive.
“My opponent had strong boxing skills, so I adapted my approach and made sure to use my kicks effectively.”
Sykes, who lives in Low Moor, has been training seriously in Muay Thai for the past two years after joining the renowned Bad Company Gym in Leeds, widely regarded as one of the leading Thai boxing gyms in England.
He now trains up to six times a week as he continues to develop his skills.
Selection for Team England marks a significant milestone in his career.
“It’s a real honour to represent England for the first time,” he said.
“I’ve been to Thailand twice before, but this will be a completely different experience competing there. I’m especially looking forward to the pre-tournament training at a well-known gym, and after the competition we’re hoping to spend some time in Chiang Mai.”
The Muay Thai World Festival takes place over five days, starting on June 25, and will bring together fighters from across the globe.
Sykes’ mother, Becky, says the sport has had a positive impact on her son’s development. “We’re very proud of what Cain has achieved,” she said.
“Muay Thai has made him stronger both physically and mentally, and it’s been great for his confidence. He’s dedicated to his training and takes his nutrition seriously. While there are risks, we feel the benefits far outweigh them.”
The trip to Bangkok is being self-funded by the Sykes family, who are currently seeking sponsorship to support Cain’s participation.
