The club has big plans for classes for the community

A community boxing club is hoping to raise money to buy a vehicle to transport young boxers to events after a car crash left one of their coaches’ car completely written off.
Three boxers and two coaches from Mayflower ABC boxers were on their way to an event in Southampton when they were involved in a scary crash on Saturday, April 18.
Club secretary Abbie told PlymouthLive: “It was quite a bad crash but luckily there were no major injuries.
“The police and paramedics were great, they checked everyone over and even dropped them to Honiton where [we] could pick them up.
“The police did commend our coach for his actions and said ‘if he hadn’t manoeuvred, it would have been a lot worse'”.
Luckily, the three boxers and two coaches were able to walk away with just bruises, but the car was so damaged in the crash it was written off.

The boxers and coaches did not make it to the event, but did make it safely back to Plymouth following the traumatic ordeal.
The club does not currently have a dedicated vehicle to transport boxers to events, so the coaches use their personal vehicles to get to and from events.
Abbie told PlymouthLive the fundraiser will help them get a club vehicle so they’re not reliant on personal cars for events.
Mayflower ABC said: “It is much harder for us to keep up with commitments to the club and the boxers. To help get back in track, we’re organising a small fundraiser to go towards a club car”.

Abbie also said that despite being involved in the crash, the boxers “were amazing” and came back to the gym to continue training.
The club has boxers of all ages involved. Kids as young as eight can join and train until they’re 10 where they can pass medical assessments and begin competing.
Senior boxers can compete between ages 18-40, but Abbie said they have older boxers who do not compete but still show up and train with everyone else.
The club was using the gym at Stonehouse Barracks but moved to let a venue as it was closed for works.
Abbie told PlymouthLive Mayflower ABC is waiting to open their own premises along Miller Court, and that they have incredibly exciting plans for a range of new classes for the community when they open.
Abbie said: “We want to give back to the community. Boxing is competitive, but we are here for the community too.

“Our sponsors help so much as well. We pay for nights away when boxers make their achievements. It’s all club money, we don’t ask parents to fund it, so we really appreciate the support.”
Mayflower ABC are also planning a show on May 10 to help their fundraiser for the club.
