Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club started works on a new 1,020sqm clubhouse, public cafe and public toilets in January last year and progress is coming along.

It is hoped the new development will be completed by this year.

The project will also include five new homes alongside the leisure facilities and the housing development will be known as Balfour Place.

The building, which will have a sloped, living roof, is being built with the aim of helping future-proof the golf club and make the sport more accessible to the community.

A week ago, the golf club, which is based in Old Felixstowe, shared a video on Facebook illustrating how far the clubhouse has come in a year.

The video shows the majority of the structure built, which will have a view of the sea.

In January last year, Mick Thomas, chair of Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club, said: “We are delighted to be building a new state-of-the-art clubhouse.

“We are incredibly proud of our heritage as the fifth oldest club in England and with nearly 150 years of gold played here, we are looking forward to having a clubhouse that meets the modern needs of everyone, including the wider community.”

East Suffolk Council approved the plans in December 2019 and has sold part of its Clifflands car park to the golf club for the project.

The club, founded in 1880, has two courses – an 18-hole championship links course and a nine-hole course.

The club also hopes to provide a space for weddings from later in the year.

On its website, the club says: “As one of England’s oldest golf clubs, Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club provides a rich heritage backdrop, complemented by stunning coastal views, ensuring a memorable experience for you and your guests.”

There will be space for up to 100 daytime guests and 120 in the evening.
