A white, yellow and purple bouquet had been placed onto the collapsed stonework along Helmshore Road, where a destroyed section of wall now lies behind cones and warning tape.

Lancashire Constabulary were called to the road, near the junction with Dean Road, at around midnight on Monday, May 4, following the crash.

A VW Golf travelling southbound struck the side of the property, which forms part of a row of terraced housing, leaving brickwork reduced to rubble along the main road.

The driver, a man in his 20s, suffered multiple injuries and was later pronounced dead in hospital.

Two 18-year-old women who were passengers in the car were seriously injured and remain in hospital.

Lancashire Constabulary have confirmed that specialist officers are supporting their families.

Sgt Anthony Beckett, of the roads policing unit, said earlier today: “My thoughts first and foremost are very much with the family and loved ones of the driver who has very sadly passed away, and with the girls as they receive care and treatment in hospital.
