Footage shows a stranded dolphin
A dolphin has escaped after becoming ‘trapped’ in a lock on the River Medway in Maidstone. The stranded animal was initially spotted at Allington Lock circling and flipping in and out of the water on Sunday (May 3).
British Divers Marine Life Rescue said the dolphin had made its way through a set of lock gates and was waiting for the opportunity to pass back through.
Volunteers from BDMLR had been monitoring the dolphin’s movements, and continued to do so while the dolphin was in the river.
It was confirmed on Tuesday (May 5) that the animal had escaped. A BDMLR spokesperson said: “BDMLR were made aware of a young common dolphin in the River Medway.
“The dolphin didn’t appear to be injured or in poor health, and yesterday evening left the lock gate and last seen heading to the open water of the estuary.
“We urge all river users to avoid dolphins if they are seen in rivers and water courses, if possible, and if they must pass them, to slow down and not approach.”
