This week we have another chapter from the big-budget Citadel, starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra, and The Gold’s Neil Forsyth has a new drama based on an extraordinary true story, in Legends. There’s also Unconditional, a new Israeli drama on Apple TV, Fallen gives a welcome dose of fantasy to your weekend and Amandaland returns with lots more laughter.
Legends
Available on Netflix in the UK and the US
Written by Neil Forsyth, who recently dramatised the Brink’s-Mat robbery for the BBC in The Gold, this gripping new drama tells the untold true story of a group of British customs officials sent undercover to infiltrate Britain’s biggest drugs gangs in the early 1990s. Starring Tom Burke, Steve Coogan and Hayley Squires, the show tells an extraordinary story of people who — with limited training, resources and recognition — risked their lives with only alter-egos (known as “legends”) to help to keep them safe. It’s a rollercoaster ride of a drama that you will binge watch over the weekend.
Citadel
Available on Prime Video in the UK and the US
One of the most expensive television shows yet made, with a reported $300 million budget for the first six-episode season, there’s plenty of glitz and gloss on screen in this spy action thriller. It stars Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra as secret agents Mason Kane and Nadia Sinh, whose memories have been wiped. They are drawn back into espionage eight years later to prevent a new world order. The second series will see a return of our central protagonists in a show designed for multiple international spin-offs.
Unconditional
Available on Apple TV in the UK and the US
Israeli television shows have made quite an impact on television in the past few years — with Prisoners of War being adapted to Homeland and Tehran and Fauda both winning fans across the globe. Apple will be hoping for similar success from its latest drama series, which follows a mother and daughter whose holiday turns to a nightmare when 23-year-old Gali is arrested for drug smuggling in Moscow. When her mother refuses to accept the charges she is drawn into a deadly web of crime and deception in this dark and twisty thriller.
Amandaland
Available on BBC iPlayer in the UK
While some comedy fans will still yearn for the original crew from Motherland to be back together on our screens, this spin-off featuring Lucy Punch as the titular Amanda Hughes has been a big hit for the BBC after a storming first series and a Christmas special. Now, Amanda is back in So-Ha for a second run and she is in no hurry to slow down as she juggles her teenage children, her snobbish mum Felicity (Joanna Lumley) and her desire to be the biggest online lifestyle influencer in South Harlesden. Prepare yourself for plenty more cringes, silliness and laughs.
Fallen
Available on ITVX in the UK and AMC+ in the US
An award-winning fantasy drama based on the novels of Lauren Kate, Fallen will appeal to anyone who has a penchant for young-adult-themed conspiracies and dark and twisty storytelling. The story follows 17-year-old Lucinda “Luce” Price, who ends up at the isolated Sword and Cross rehabilitation centre after committing a crime that she can’t remember. While there she meets two mysterious men who we discover are fallen angels as she uncovers a cursed reincarnated past. Plenty for a new generation of Twilight-like fantasy fans to get their teeth into.
